Purpose of Gathering

In 1996, Fr. Sinclair Oubre, Fr. Don Brooks of Oklahoma City, and Fr. Martin Mangan of Decatur, Illinois worked together to put together the first gathering. It was attended by Catholics who were involved in their faith and in worker and union issues. The meeting was small, but three of its achievements were:

1. The formation of a loose group of clergy, religious and laity under the title of The Catholic-Labor Network;
2. The establishment of a web page that attempts to be a one stop site for someone who is seeking information regarding our Church’s teachings regarding workers and unions, and assorted related issues.
3. The development of a means of supporting each other in our own local labor struggles.

Last year, Fr. Sinclair and Tom Shellabarger of the Office of Social Development and World Peace of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops coordinated a follow-up gathering timed to coincide with the USCCB's Social Ministry Gathering .

This year we are trying expand last year’s efforts with a full wrap-around session, a luncheon for participants of the larger social ministry gathering.
